Working With Different Generations

Most workplaces consist of a wide variety of age groups, from young high school and college graduates to senior citizens. While everyone in a certain age group is different, here are some general ways to learn how to work with people from diverse generations.

Display Good Communication

Most people, regardless of generation, appreciate open lines of communication. In addition to managers being open with employees, a company should encourage team members to communicate with each other and back to their managers, without fear of retaliation. This helps ensure that everyone is able to work well together.

Avoid Stereotyping

While it can be easy to view all boomers as rigid, Generation X members as cynical, or millennials as people who avoid hard work, it is best to stay away from making generalizations about an entire generation. For example, some companies might avoid hiring millennials as salespeople because of their perceived lack of ambition and motivation. However, this practice can lead to overlooking some very talented people who would be an asset to a sales team.

Treat Everyone Fairly

Treat everyone equally, no matter which generation they are from. Not only does this help ensure that your company is not accused of age discrimination, but it is simply the right thing to do.

Keep these things in mind when working with people from different generations.
